Nursing home's neglect responsible for amputation, says daughter

Collinsville Care Center

The daughter of a one-legged, 82-year-old man alleges Collinsville Care Center's negligence was responsible for the amputation of her father's last leg.

Marilyn Vaughn of East St. Louis filed suit April 8 in Madison County Circuit Court against the nursing home claiming it failed to properly check her father's blood sugar levels as ordered by his physician. She is seeking at least $50,000 in damages.

Vaughn claims Collinsville Care Center failed to respond to her father's complaints of left foot pain and heel soreness, sores on his left leg and foot, large open blisters, and the separation of skin underneath his toes.

He was admitted to the center on Dec. 27, 2004, for veteran’s respite care for 15 days. His leg was amputated Jan. 17.

Vaughn claims Collinsville Care Center failed to monitor Chambers' foot and leg for development of pressure sores, failed to conduct accu-checks twice daily as ordered by doctors and failed to administer insulin as ordered.

Vaughn claims that when her father was admitted to the care center his left foot was in good condition, in that he had no ulceration, discoloring, sloughing of the skin, bloody toes, blisters or complaints of pain in his left foot.

Vaughn is represented by Brian Polinske of Edwardsville. She also filed a motion for preferential trial setting asking the court to expedite this case due to her father’s age.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Nicholas Byron.
