U.S. Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales has appointed U.S. Attorney Ronald J. Tenpas to serve a three-year term on his 2005 Attorney General’s Advisory Committee of United States Attorneys.
Ronald J. Tenpas was appointed interim U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois in 2003 by former Attorney General John Ashcroft and was presidentially appointed in March 2004.
Prior to his appointment, Tenpas was an assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland (1999-2003); an assistant U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida (1997-1999); an associate with Carlton, Fields Law Firm of Tampa (1993-1997); and a law clerk to Supreme Court Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist (1991-1992).
Tenpas serves as vice chair of the Advisory Committee’s Sentencing Guidelines Subcommittee and works closely with the U.S. Attorneys in their efforts to address the sentencing guidelines in the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent Booker and FanFan decisions, which addressed federal sentencing practices.
“The Advisory Committee is extremely valuable as its members provide sound advice and counsel on a variety of law enforcement issues and represents the voice of all of the United States Attorneys in making Department policy,” said Gonzales.
“I look forward to working closely with the Committee so that together we can continue to ensure that the rights of all citizens are protected and guaranteed under the law.”
In addition to Tenpas, Gonzales appointed David E. Nahmias, U.S. Attorney, Northern District of Georgia, Paul Ignatius Perez, U.S. Attorney, Middle District of Florida, Gretchen C. F. Shappert, U.S. Attorney, Western District of North Carolina, Donald W. Washington, U.S. Attorney, Western District of Louisiana.
