Dr. Lawrence Shipley
Granite City chiropractor Lawrence Shipley will be in court again March 23 on a motion to dismiss his class action complaint he filed against Farmers Insurance on Oct. 16, 2003.
Shipley has filed at least 15 class action complaints against insurance companies within the past two years.
Circuit Judge Andy Matoesian will hear Farmers' motion to dismiss the complaint along with a motion filed by Shipley to compel discovery, at 9 a.m. in courtroom 351.
Shipley, represented by The Lakin Law Firm of Wood River, alleges Farmers Insurance only paid part of the claim he filed and accuses the insurance company of using computer software to uniformly reduce benefits that are paid to doctors.
He contends he billed Farmers more than $1,000 for "reasonable" medical treatment provided to patients. Farmers allegedly only paid Shipley part of the claim.
The suit also alleges that a biased software used by Farmers arbitrarily lowers the cap that does not reflect actual reasonable expenses of medical providers.
He claims Farmers uses this database knowing it is biased and designed to reduce what are in fact reasonable charges.
