When Craig Keeney took his companion for a spin on the dance floor at the Hiway House in Godfrey, his next move was not smooth.

A wet, slippery floor caused Keeney to slip and fall, resulting in extensive internal and external injuries. Seeking more than $100,000 in damages, Keeney filed suit Feb. 1 against The Hiway House and its bar, The Mercantile, and owners Steven L. McCann and Matthew Andrews.

According to the suit, Keeney claims the spill took place on Feb. 16, 2003. He was staying overnight at the Godfrey lodge.

Keeney alleges he was made sick, sore, lame and disordered and suffered extensive injuries to his body as a whole, both internally and externally, suffered a loss of earning capacity both past and future and suffered and continues to suffer pain and suffering.

The Hiway House was negligent because it allowed a wet and slippery floor to remain on premises, failed to keep the floor dry for people using the dance floor, failed to provide adequate rugs or carpeting for patrons to wipe their feet, took inadequate measures to remove snow from walkways and failed to post signs warning of the condition.

Keeney states that he has suffered disability and disfigurement, and has to spend large sums of money to cure his injuries and will be required in the future to spend money on medical bills, and also claims he lost wages and continues to do so.

Represented by Lon Weaver of East Alton, the case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Andres Matoesian.
