Scott A. Baze, represented by Marc Parker of the Lakin Law Firm of Wood River, filed a Jones Act case Jan. 13 in Madison County's Civil Law Division against Canton Marine Towing Company.
He is seeking to collect at least $50,000 in damages plus all costs of the suit and prejudgment interest.
Baze claims that on or about May 9, 2004, he was employed by the defendant as a deckhand and a member of the crew M/V Sir Randy J, which was afloat on the Mississippi River.
According to the suit, Canton was negligent in failing to provide him with a safe place to work, failed to provide him with adequate assistance in the performance of his duties, failed to warn him of the dangers in the area he was assigned to work in, and failed to properly supervise the work he was performing.
Baze claims the defendant's vessel and appurtenances were unseaworthy.
As a result of this alleged negligence, Baze claims he was injured in one or more of the following respects:
Baze is also seeking to collect at least $40 per day and seeking all reasonable medical expenses in the diagnosis and treatment of his injuries since the defendant allegedly failed to meet its duty under General Maritime Law to provide him with full and adequate maintenance and cure for his injuries.
The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge George Moran Jr.
