10/19/02-Pittsburgh Penguins hockey player Kevin Stevens graduated from the Madison County Court's drug treatment program and received his 'diploma' from Judge Edward Ferguson. Stevens was arrested in January 2000 with cocaine, a prositute and a pimp in a Collinsville hotel room.
10/21/93-Judge Phillip Kardis dismissed a libel suit against the Belleville News-Democrat brought by St. Clair County Circuit Court Judge William Starnes. He had sued the newspaper after it published attorney Amiel Cueto's allegations to the Illinois Judicial Inquiry Board of Starnes' misconduct.
10/22/96-Battling for a seat in the U.S. Congress, then Madison County Treasurer John Shimkus and State Rep. Jay Hoffman (D-Collinsville) sparred over taxes. Shimkus returned $1,000 in county salary while Hoffman chided him for a "campaign stunt." Shimkus went on to win election, succeeding now U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Springfield).
