Woman's estate alleges negligent care at nursing home

The estate of a woman who died in 2013 is suing the nursing home that last handled her care.

Edward McDonald, as administrator of the estate of Evelyn McDonald, filed a lawsuit on March 12 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Caseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Inc., doing business as Caseyville Nursing and Rehab Center, SW Financial Services Co. and Caseyville Property.

Evelyn McDonald died July 7, 2013. She had been a resident at Caseyville Nursing and Rehab Center from March 13, 2013, to June 25, 2013, the suit states.

During that time, according to the complaint, the center was negligent and careless in a multitude of ways in violation of the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act regarding Evelyn McDonald's care. Ultimately, the suit continues, she sustained "multiple open wounds, dehydration, malnutrition, weight loss, sepsis with multiple organ dysfunction and failure, as well as other conditions that caused and contributed to her death."

Edward McDonald seeks in excess of $50,000 for each of 12 counts of negligence or medical malpractice, totaling $300,000, plus costs. He is represented by attorney D. Jeffrey Ezra of Ezra and Associates in Collinsville.
