Woman sues driver in three-car collision

A woman claims she suffered severe injuries from a three-car collision in Bethalto.

Betty J. Alexander filed a lawsuit on March 24 in Madison County Circuit Court against Jayme L. Butler, alleging vehicular negligence in the January 2014 accident.

According to the complaint, Alexander was traveling westbound on Illinois Highway 140 in Bethalto on or about Jan. 4, 2014, when Butler, also headed westbound, allegedly collided with a vehicle driven by third party James I. Johnson. The impact of the first collision allegedly caused Johnson’s car to crash into the plaintiff’s vehicle.

Alexander claims Butler was negligent in failing to keep a proper lookout for other vehicles, failing to drive safely, failing to brake properly and failing to reduce speed appropriately. An additional claim posits that the defendant may have been driving while distracted.

The plaintiff alleges injuries severe enough in nature to cause disability, disfigurement, great pain and mental anguish.

Citing loss of future earnings, diminished capacity, and medical expenses, Alexander is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, plus attorneys’ fees and costs.

She is represented by attorney Gregory Tobin of Pratt & Tobin, East Alton.
