Man's estate accusess doctors of failing to monitor and treat several alleged injuries

A late man's estate is suing Memorial Hospital and three doctors for medical malpractice, resulting in the patient's death.

According to a lawsuit filed March 17 in St. Clair County Circuit Court, Catherine Leffler, as administrator of the estate of the late Thomas Costello, is suing Protestant Memorial Medical Center Inc., doing business as Memorial Hospital; Drs. Edward Rose, Shabbin A. Shaikh and Nidal Shawahin; Belleville Emergency Physicians; P.C. Associates LLC, doing business as Internal Medicine Specialists of Southern Illinois; and Rose Medical Group LLC.

Costello sought care from the defendants on March 30, 2013. Thereafter, according to the lawsuit, the defendants allegedly "failed to adequately monitor the level of consciousness, respiratory status and need for supplemental oxygen, failed to report a marked change in mental status on April 4, 2013, failed to adequately evaluate and treat the acidosis, failed to adequately evaluate and treat the underlying pulmonary insufficiency, failed to adequately evaluate and treat the hypocalcemia and elevated hemoglobin and failed to adequately evaluate and treat the acute kidney injury."

As a result, Costello "suffered permanent pain, mental anguish, disability and disfigurement, until he died," the suit states.

He died April 5, 2013.

Leffler seeks damages in excess of $700,000, plus costs.

Leffler is represented by attorney Todd Matthews of Edwardsville.
