Customer sues three fitness centers after falling off treadmill

A St. Clair County woman filed suit against three branches of a fitness organization after she allegedly fell off a treadmill during a free trial membership.

Twaunda Flie, of Belleville, brought a complaint on March 23 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Club Fitness Inc. of Peoria, Club Fitness of Alton LLC in Alton and Decatur Health Club Ltd. of Forsyth, alleging carelessness and negligence in a May 2013 incident.

The plaintiff claims she was invited to a 7-day trial membership to use the defendants’ workout facility and work with personal trainers. According to the filing, at their facility in Fairview Heights on or about May 7, 2013, a personal trainer programmed a treadmill for the plaintiff and then left the area without instructing Flie how to stop the machine.

Prior to the trainer returning, Flie became fatigued. Unable to shut the treadmill off on her own, she fell and incurred injuries to her neck, back, hands and arms, the suit states.

The plaintiff claims her fall and injury was directly caused by the facility employee’s negligence. As a result, she claims she lost wages, suffered pain and discomfort and incurred medical expenses.

Flie seeks damages in excess of $50,000, plus attorneys’ fees and costs. She is represented by Lane Matthews of Brown & Crouppen in St. Louis.
