Doctors deny negligence in case alleging failure to diagnose painful injury

A doctor and his physician assistant at the O’Fallon Medical Center deny allegations of negligence in a medical malpractice lawsuit alleging they failed to diagnose a boil near a patient’s anus, causing him intense pain.

According to the Nov. 20 complaint, Gary L. Morris claims he visited defendant O’Fallon Medical Center on Nov. 27, 2012, and was seeing physician’s assistant Vanessa M. Stults and Dr. Kevin L. Pritchett. The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to properly examine him and to diagnose him with a perirectal abscess.

As a result, Morris claims he lost a chance for a more favorable outcome, suffered permanent pain, mental anguish and disability and endured disfigurement. He also claims he lost his enjoyment of life and incurred medical costs, the suit states.

Morris blames the defendants for causing his injuries, saying they negligently failed to properly communicate information regarding his symptoms and failed to properly refer him to a qualified physician.

Pritchett denied the allegations in his Feb. 20 answer.

Stults also denied the allegations against her in her Feb. 23 answer.

Morris seeks a judgment of more than $100,000, plus costs.

Circuit Judge Robert LeChien scheduled a status conference for May 11 at 9:30 a.m.

Morris is represented by Devin M. Jones of Herris Jones Law Firm in DuQuoin.

The defendants are represented by Timothy S. Richards of Neville, Richards & Wuller, LLC, in Belleville.
