Two Madison County construction firms accused of negligence in house fire

Two Madison County construction companies are accused of negligence for allowing a house under construction to catch fire.

State Farm Fire and Casualty Company, as subrogee of Henry J. Halverson, filed a lawsuit Sept. 30 in Madison County Circuit Court against Metro East Roofing and Julius Construction.

According to the complaint, Halverson hired Metro East Roofing to work on his Bellevue Drive home in Collinsville in June 2012. Metro East allegedly subcontracted the job and Julius Construction was hired to complete the roofing services in July 2012. Halverson claims the house caught fire during construction.

State Farm, Halverson's home insurance company, paid him more than $200,000 for the damage done to the house, according to the complaint. The company accuses the defendants of negligence, breach of contract and breach of implied warranty. State Farm asks to be reimbursed for the damage claim it paid to Halverson plus court fees.

Attorney Philip T. Carroll of Chicago represents State Farm. They request a jury trial.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 14-L-1337.
