Philip Alfeld picked associate judge in Madison County; Replaces retiring Dean Sweet

Attorney Philip B. Alfeld of counsel with the Schrempf, Kelly, Napp & Darr firm in Alton has been picked by the Third Circuit's nine elected circuit judges to serve as associate judge in Madison County.

Alfeld will succeed Associate Judge Dean Sweet who is retiring today.

Alfeld received his undergraduate degree in 1975 from the University of Illinois and his juris doctorate in 1980 from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

Alfeld has been an assistant State’s Attorney and a special assistant Attorney General since 1989.

He was a sole practitioner from 1995 to 1998, according to a release from the Third Circuit. Before that, he was a partner with the firm of Kardis, Forbes and Alfeld from 1988 to 1995.

He also was a partner at Carlson and Alfeld from 1986-1988, an associate with Talbert, Carlson and Mallon and an associate with Paul L. Pratt PC from 1981 to 1985.

He is a current member of the Illinois State Bar Association and the American Criminal Justice Association. He is the past President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and member of the Alton-Wood River Bar Association.

Alfeld is a past member of the the American Bar Association, Madison County Bar Association, Green County Bar Association, American Association of Trial Lawyers and Illinois Trial Lawyers Association.

He is a member of the Criminal Justice Advisory Board for Lewis & Clark Community College and has been an instructor of Constitutional Law at Lewis & Clark from 1991 to present.

“I am pleased to have a person of Phil Alfeld’s ability and experience joining us on the Madison County Bench.  He will be a great addition,” said Chief Judge Dave Hylla in a press release.

Alfeld and his wife Amy have lived in Godfrey for 20 years.
