Illinois American Water sued over man's fall into meter pit

A man is suing after he is injured by falling into a water meter pit.

Bruce T. Combs filed a lawsuit Jan. 29 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Illinois American Water, a subsidiary of American Waterworks Co. Inc., doing business as Illinois-American Water Co., citing negligence.

According to the complaint, on June 27, Combs was walking near the pool at the Rockwood Apartments Complex when he stepped on a water meter cover, which he claims was not properly secured. Combs says the cover flipped onto its side and caused him to fall into the water meter pit, causing serious injury. The complaint claims the defendant is the owner of the pit, meter and meter cover and had a duty to make repairs to any defective covers and failed to do so, which led to Combs' injury.

Combs is seeking more than $50,000 in damages.

He is being represented in the case by attorney Richard G. Reed.

St. Clair County Circuit Court Case No. 14-L-126.
