86 individual NuvaRing cases filed in St. Clair County

Attorney John Driscoll of St. Louis has filed 86 individual complaints against the makers of NuvaRing vaginal contraceptive ring in St. Clair County Circuit on behalf of women from across the country.

The suits filed Jan. 13 seek damages for alleged personal injuries including thrombic clotting problems, thrombosis, embolisms, deep vein thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism.

Defendants include Organon USA, Inc., Organon Pharmaceutical USA, Organon International, Schering-Plough Corp. and Merck & Co.

Organon was a human pharmaceutical company headquartered in Oss, Netherlands. In November 2007, Schering-Plough Corporation, based in New Jersey, acquired Organon. Merck merged with Schering Plough in 2009.

The 95-page suits say that venue is proper in St. Clair County because the companies transacted businesses in the county, among other reasons.

A Multi-District Litigation (MDL) involving similar claims from across the country is active in the Eastern District of Missouri in St. Louis. District Judge Rodney W. Sippel presides over the MDL which was opened in 2008.
