Belleville woman claims she was injured after being thrown from golf cart

By Kasey Schefflin-Emrich | Jun 19, 2015

A Belleville resident is suing a fellow resident, golf course and municipal corporation for the injuries she claims she endured as the result of being thrown from a golf cart.

Laura Parrish filed a lawsuit on June 12 in Madison County Circuit Court against Nick Espolt, Spencer T. Olin Golf Course and the city of Alton, citing negligence and willful and wanton misconduct.

According to the complaint, on around June 14, 2014, Parrish and Espolt were both business invitees participating in a golf tournament at the Alton golf course when Parrish was thrown while riding as a passenger in a golf cart being operated by Espolt in the course's parking lot.

Espolt is faulted with recklessly operating the golf court and failing to reduce his speed as to avoid an accident.

The suit claims Spencer T. Olin Golf Course failed to provide adequate instructions and supervision in the operation of these golf carts.

Staff and employees of the golf course also allowed business invitees to operate the carts in an area that they knew would be too congested to safely operate them, and recklessly allowed carts to be operated by individuals that had been drinking alcohol in addition to recklessly allowing carts to be operated even after learning of prior incidents that have occurred involving operating golf courts in parking lots. The city of Alton is faulted with these same three allegations.

Parrish alleges she suffered and continues to suffer severe and permanent injuries, physical and mental pain, disability, medical expenses and lost wages.

She is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, plus other relief deemed appropriate by the court.

Parrish is represented by Marc W. Parker of Parker Law, P.C. in Maryville.

Madison County Circuit Court case number 15-L-754.
