A woman claims she was injured after being knocked down on a dance floor at the Alton VFW.

Mary L. Svoboda filed a lawsuit on May 26 in Madison County Circuit Court against Alton VFW Post 1308 alleging premises liability.

According to the complaint, Svoboda was on the VFW post's premises located at 4445 Alby in Alton on or about Aug. 1, 2014, when she was knocked down on the dance floor by another customer/patron.

The plaintiff alleges severe and permanent injuries. She claims the VFW post improperly managed, maintained and/or controlled the premises; failed to provide adequate security and inspect or supervise the dance floor; overserved alcohol to its patrons; and permitted its patrons to wildly thrash about the dance floor.

Svoboda claims she has suffered pain and anguish and incurred medical expenses, alleging injuries to her hip, shoulder and spine and various parts of her body.

The plaintiff claims she will be permanently disabled and disfigured as a result of the incident and anticipates lost income, diminished everyday functioning and future medical expenses.

Svoboda relies on the Dram Shop Act and seeks damages in excess of $50,000, plus attorneys’ fees and costs. She is represented by Gregory Tobin of Pratt & Tobin in East Alton.
