Justice David K. Overstreet of the Supreme Court of Illinois has begun an application process for a resident circuit judge vacancy in Madison County in the Third Judicial Circuit, Subcircuit Two.
The vacancy was created by the upcoming retirement of Chief Judge Stephen A. Stobbs, effective December 31, 2024. The individual appointed will serve as a resident circuit judge until December 7, 2026, following the 2026 November general election. Qualifications for the office of circuit judge are set forth in section 11 of article VI of the Illinois Constitution and 705 ILCS 40/2(d). Persons meeting those qualifications are invited to submit applications containing the information requested in the Applicant Information sheet for the Resident Circuit Judge, Madison County, Third Judicial Circuit, Second Subcircuit Vacancy along with a cover letter to Justice David K. Overstreet, P.O. Box 489, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864 or electronically to his Judicial Secretary, René Gozia at rgozia@illinoiscourts.gov. Applications must be received in Justice Overstreet’s office by Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
To be eligible for consideration for appointment, the applicant must be a lawyer licensed to practice law in Illinois and must be a resident of the county and subcircuit for which they are applying. The Third Judicial Circuit is composed of Madison County and Bond County.
