EDWARDSVILLE - A shopper at the Granite City Schnucks grocery store claims she was seriously injured when she slipped and fell on a foreign substance.

Sheena Patton filed the lawsuit in the Madison County Circuit Court against Schnuck Markets Inc. and Deanna Groves.

According to the complaint, Patton was at the Schnucks grocery store in Granite City on Aug. 23. She claims she was shopping when she slipped on a foreign substance, causing her to fall to the floor. As a result, Patton claims she suffered "serious, permanent and disabling injuries."

Groves is named a defendant because she is the manager of the Granite City store.

Patton alleges the defendants negligently failed to inspect the premises, allowed a foreign substance to remain on the floor, failed to properly maintain the premises, failed to provide any type of warning to customers of the "unsafe condition," failed to properly train its employees not to create or allow dangerous conditions to exist, and were otherwise careless in ownership, operation, maintenance and management of the store.

Patton claims she incurred medical expenses, endured pain and suffering and will continue to suffer and incur medical expenses in the future.

The plaintiff seeks compensation in excess of $50,000, plus court costs. She is represented by John Hipskind of Hipskind & McAninch LLC in Belleville.
