BELLEVILLE — A Cahokia high school student is suing the school district, alleging the principal directed officers to restrain him as he was entering the school.

DW,  a minor, by his next friend Devea Wyatt, filed a complaint in the St. Clair County Circuit against Cahokia Unit School District #187 and John Doe security officers, alleging assault.

According to the plaintiffs' complaint, DW was entering Cahokia High School on Sept. 26, 2022. They claim DW was assaulted by the school's principal Terrance Tate and one or more security officer. The plaintiffs claim that following the alleged assault, DW was then handcuffed, seized and taken to a school security office. They further allege DW suffered a back injury due to the unprovoked assault and was also suspended from school.

The plaintiffs seek monetary relief of more than $50,000, interest and all other just relief. They are represented by Attorney Kenneth Leeds in St. Louis.
