EDWARDSVILLE — A woman who had been incarcerated at the Madison County Jail claims her finger was severed while cleaning the showers.

Kristen Martin filed a complaint on Nov. 3 in Madison County Circuit Court against Madison County Sheriff's Department.

According to her complaint, Martin was an inmate who was housed at the Madison County Jail on Nov. 4, 2023. She claims she was cleaning the shower stall to prep for bathing and lifted the shower seat to its upright position. Martin alleges that instead of locking in the upright stationary condition, the "defective" seat suddenly fell onto her hand and severed her finger on her right hand. She claims she sought treatment from jail personnel, who mocked and criticized her while refusing to give her timely medical treatment. She alleges their actions led to further injury.

Martin alleges the defendant failed to maintain and provide reasonably adequate facilities in a reasonably safe condition or provide her with adequate medical care.

Martin seeks monetary relief of more than $50,000, plus interest and all other just relief. She is represented by Craig Jensen and Brian Burge of MeyerJesen PC in Alton.
