BELLEVILLE — A patient claims she lost the use of her lower extremities following surgery at Memorial Hospital-Belleville.

Richard Newsom filed a complaint in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Evan Neville, MD, Protestant Memorial Medical Center Inc., doing business as Memorial Hospital -Belleville, alleging medical malpractice.

Newsom, according to his complaint, underwent a diagnostic aortogram at Memorial Medical on Sept. 27, 2021. He claims Neville caused the dissection of his infrarenal aorta, which resulted in the development of bilateral limb ischemia and requiring emergency surgery. Newsom further claims that an MRI confirmed he suffered a T12 spinal cord infarction and has lost the use of his lower extremities.

Newsom alleges Neville failed to properly perform the surgery and properly use the equipment to complete the surgical procedure. Newsom also alleges Neville failed to protect his spinal cord from damage and injured his vessels and arteries. He claims the defendants failed to obtain proper consent regarding the dangers of the procedure.

Newsom seeks monetary relief of more than $50,000, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. He is represented by Nathan Davis of The Davis Injury Law Firm LLC in St. Louis.
