EDWARDSVILLE - Jeff Cooper, Managing Partner of Flint Cooper, said he was surprised to learn he was being sued by American Express to recover a debt owed by a company that went out of business more than two years ago.

The lawsuit was filed in the Third Judicial District of Madison County Circuit Court on Oct. 17.

“The lawsuit is for debt owed by a company that ceased doing business over two years ago,” Cooper told the Madison - St. Clair Record.

“It is not for any personal debts. I was just recently apprised that I was a signatory to the account, so it is a bit of a surprise to me. However, I am sure we will be able to resolve it soon.”

According to the lawsuit, the American Express account at issue was opened on Jan. 18, 2018.

Records included with the lawsuit indicate the last payment made on the card was $32,618.75 on June 14, 2022.

Cooper did not specify what business the account was used for or what the card was used to purchase.

American Express is being represented by R. Ryan Scarfone of Rosemont-based Zwicker and Associates in the matter.

Cooper, an entrepreneur and attorney, is the founder and managing partner of Flint Cooper's complex international and financial litigation practices and co-chairs the firm's asbestos litigation and governmental relations departments.

According to Flint Cooper’s website, he also “serves as chairman of the board of Eudora Global, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Atomic 47, and board member of Citizens Rx.”

Employees of Eudora Global and Atomic 47 filed character letters on behalf of Hunter Biden's former business partner, Devon Archer, asking for leniency after he was convicted of fraud.

Archer has been vocal about his belief that Biden and his father President Joe Biden used the elder Biden's position as vice president to win deals for businesses formerly involving Archer and Hunter Biden.

During a hearing with the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability in July, committee counsel James Mandolfo questioned Archer about his association with Cooper. Archer responded that he was a "dear friend."

Also during the meeting, Archer revealed details about Hunter Biden's involvement with foreign business associates. He also confirmed Joe Biden's participation in some discussions, leading to allegations that Joe Biden may have lied to the American public about his family's business dealings and involvement.

At the time, the Oversight Committee expressed its intention to continue investigating the Biden family's financial activities and their potential impact on national security.
