List of weapons regulated by Protect Illinois Communities Act; Registration required by Jan. 1

The registry for Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s weapons ban opened on Oct. 1; and, unless the Constitutional challenges are successful, all newly regulated firearms must be registered by Jan. 1. 

The Protect Illinois Communities Act was signed into law on Jan. 10, 2023, and has been challenged in both federal and state courts. An appeal of an injunction for four consolidated lawsuits out of the Southern District of Illinois is currently pending in the Seventh Circuit. 

The items named in a long list of regulated firearms and devices include a variety of rifles, pistols and shotguns. The complete list includes: 

Rifles

The bill regulates all AK and “AK-type” rifles, including: 

  • AK, AK47, AK47S, AK–74, AKM, AKS, ARM, MAK90, MISR, NHM90, Norinco NHM91, FEG SA85, Arsenal (Bulgaria) SA93, Vector Arms AK–47 (AKS), VEPR, WASR–10, and WUM

Firearm Exemptions 

The law states that the term “assault weapon” does not apply to:

  • Any firearm that is an unserviceable firearm or has been made permanently inoperable

  • An antique firearm or a replica of an antique firearm

  • A firearm that is manually operated by bolt, pump, lever or slide action, unless the firearm is a shotgun with a revolving cylinder

  • Any air rifle as defined in Section 24.8-0.1 of this Code

  • Any handgun, as defined under the Firearm Concealed Carry Act
