BELLEVILLE – A lawsuit claims that a patient of the Mercy Rehab and Care Center in Swansea received negligent care, causing her to become severely injured.
Plaintiff Sheri Smith, as power of attorney for Sadie Adams, filed the lawsuit in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Mercy Rehab and Care Center, citing negligence in violation of the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act.
According to the lawsuit, Adams was admitted to the care of the Mercy Rehab and Care Center in Swansea on May 24, 2021. On June 26, 2021, it was noted that she had lower extremity pressure ulcers and her skin had broken down since her admission. Adams' skin allegedly continued to breakdown throughout her stay at Mercy until Sept. 5, 2021 when she was transferred to the hospital with a dislocated shoulder. On Sept. 18, Adams reportedly fell in her room and was admitted to the hospital again. On Sept. 27, Adams was transferred home for home health care.
According to the lawsuit, Mercy negligently failed to provide proper care and treatment to Adams to ensure her health and safety, failed to provide properly trained staff, failed to adequately monitor, document and treat her worsening skin condition, failed to safeguard her from pressure ulcers and failed to safeguard her from falls.
The lawsuit states that as Adams was admitted into the defendants' care, she was a protected individual under the state's Nursing Home Care Act.
Smith states that as a result of the defendant's negligence, Adams has experienced pain, suffering, disability, emotional distress and mental anguish. She adds that Adams has incurred medical expenses and will continue to require the services of medical staff to recover from her injuries.
The plaintiff is seeking damages, plus attorneys fees, court costs and any other relief the court deems proper. She is represented in this case by attorney Jonathan W. Young of Ferrell Young, LLC in Chicago.
