BELLEVILLE – State Farm is suing a Cahokia renter after her guest caused a fire on her apartment's wooden deck with a cigarillo.

State Farm Fire and Casualty Company, as subrogee of Mariconi Properties, LLC, filed the lawsuit in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Patricia Ball.

According to the lawsuit, in May 2023, State Farm Fire and Casualty Company had an active fire and casualty insurance policy with Mariconi Properties for a property in Cahokia, which was rented out to Ball. The lawsuit states Ball had a guest over at her apartment and observed her guest smoking a cigarillo on her wooden deck. According to the lawsuit, the guest improperly disposed of the cigarillo, which ignited Ball's wicker deck furniture and caused a fire to break out on the property.

State Farm states that pursuant to its insurance policy with Mariconi Properties, it made payments to Mariconi for the property damage sustained as a result of the incident. Staet Farm claims the amount has not yet been reimbursed.

The plaintiff is seeking damages in the amount of $67,859.70, plus court costs and any other relief the court deems proper. They are represented in this case by attorney Jeffrey J. Cocagne of Drake, Narup, & Mead, P.C. in Springfield.
