BELLEVILLE – State Farm Fire and Casualty Company has filed a lawsuit to seek damages against a Cahokia woman who allegedly left her gas stove on and unattended, which caused a fire to break out at her apartment.
State Farm Fire and Casualty Company, as subrogee of Mariconi Properties, LLC, filed the lawsuit in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Dennice Buchanan.
According to the lawsuit, in December 2022, State Farm Fire and Casualty Company had an active fire and casualty insurance policy for Mariconi Properties for a property in Cahokia, which was rented out to Buchanan. The lawsuit states that during this time, Buchanan negligently left a gas burner on her stove turned on while unattended. As a result, a fire was caused to break out and damage the property.
State Farm alleges that pursuant to its insurance policy with Mariconi Properties, it has made payments to Mariconi for the property damage sustained as a result of the incident. It claims that, at this time, this amount has not been reimbursed to them.
The plaintiff is seeking damages in the amount of $68,189.83, plus court costs and any other relief the court deems proper. They are represented in this case by attorney Jeffrey J. Cocagne of Drake, Narup, & Mead, P.C. in Springfield.
