BELLEVILLE – A passenger is suing Alternative Transportation Systems, claiming she fell and hit her head because a driver failed to help her off the bus.

Plaintiff Juanita McGhee filed the lawsuit in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Southwestern Illinois College, doing business as Alternative Transportation Systems, citing negligence.

According to the lawsuit, the defendant is in the business of providing medical transportation services. McGhee claims that on July 13, a driver employed by the defendant was transporting her home from a dialysis appointment. She alleges the driver should have been fully aware that she was infirm and could not safely get off the bus without assistance.

McGhee claims the driver failed to offer her assistance when getting off the bus, forcing her to attempt to try and descend from the bus herself.  McGhee said that as she was trying to get off the bus, she stumbled backwards and hit her head on the corner of a metal frame of one of the bus seats, causing her to sustain serious injuries.

McGhee states that the defendant was negligent in failing to assist her in getting off the bus. As a result of their negligence, she claims she has sustained injuries which have caused her to experience pain, suffering, and disability. She also claims her injuries will impact her ability to enjoy normal life. She adds that she has incurred medical expenses and will continue to require the services of medical staff to recover.

The plaintiff is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, plus court costs and any other relief the court deems proper. She is represented in this case by attorney Michael L. McGlynn of McGlynn & McGlynn in Belleville.
