St. Elizabeth's Hospital named in wrongful death lawsuit

BELLEVILLE – The family of a patient at St. Elizabeth's Hospital's claims he was misdiagnosed and received negligent care prior to his death.

Plaintiffs Caris, Caleb and Chris Lidisky, acting as co-administrators of the estate of Ricky Lidisky, filed a wrongful death lawsuit in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against St. Elizabeth's Hospital of the Hospital Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, doing business as HSHS St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Gladys Schmees, FNP, Alyssa Duenas, PA, Jeffrey Scott Shafer, M.D., Jamila Crawford, M.D., Kaci Alexander, M.D., Protestant Memorial Medical Center, Inc, doing business as Memorial Hospital - Shiloh, Denis Kuzelj, M.D., and Emily Fuhler, PA, citing negligence and recklessness in violation of the Illinois Wrongful Death Act.

According to the lawsuit, Ricky Lidisky died on Oct. 23, 2022, leaving his surviving children as co-special administrators of his estate. The lawsuit states that Ricky was a patient at St. Elizabeth's on Oct. 1, Oct. 15 and Oct. 14, 2022. The plaintiffs allege that on those dates, the defendants negligently failed to properly diagnose and provide proper care to Ricky, resulting in his death. 

The plaintiffs state that as a result of the defendants' negligence they have been deprived of his love, support and companionship, causing them to suffer grief and mental anguish. They add that they have incurred substantial medical and funeral expenses as a result of the defendants' negligence. 

The plaintiffs are seeking damages in excess of $75,000, plus court costs and any other relief the court deems proper. They are represented in this case by attorney Samantha S. Unsell of Keefe, Keefe & Unsell, P.C. in Belleville.
