BELLEVILLE – A man has filed a negligence lawsuit against HSHS Medical Group, claiming he was injured during a medical procedure.

Plaintiff Stephen "James" Buckman and Shirley Buckman filed the lawsuit in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against HSHS Medical Group, Inc., Metro-East Services, Inc. doing business as Memorial Hospital East and Maung Thu, M.D., citing negligence.

According to the lawsuit, Stephen Buckman received medical services at a HSHS Medical Group healthcare facility on July 30, 2021. Buckman alleges the defendants negligently failed to remove a ureteroscope and safety wire that had gotten stuck in his body, causing ureteral damage.

Buckman claims he sustained severe and permanent damage to his right ureter, urinary system, and reproductive system. He alleges his injuries have caused him to experience pain and suffering. He also claims his injuries will impact his ability to enjoy normal life. He adds that he has incurred significant medical expenses and will continue to require the services of medical staff to recover.

Stephen Buckman's wife, Shirley, states that as a result of the defendant's negligence, she has been deprived of her husband's support and consortium.

The plaintiffs are seeking damages in excess of $50,000, plus court costs. They are represented in this case by attorney Joseph A. Bartholomew of Cook, Bartholomew, Shevlin, Cook & Jones, LLP in Belleville.
