BELLEVILLE – A negligence lawsuit has been filed against East St. Louis School District 18, alleging that one of its elementary school teachers spilled hot chocolate on a student.

Plaintiff Sharita Andrews filed a lawsuit on behalf of her minor daughter, J.L., in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against East St. Louis School District 189 and the child's teacher, citing negligence.

According to the lawsuit, J.L. was a third grade student at Paul L. Dunbar Elementary school, which is under the jurisdiction of East St. Louis School District 189.

The lawsuit alleges that on Dec. 17, 2021, J.L.'s teacher was serving hot chocolate to her third grade class when she allegedly spilled the beverage on J.L., causing her to suffer injuries.

Andrews claims J.L. has suffered severe burns and scarring because of the incident. She allegedly experienced pain, suffering, mental anguish and disfigurement. The plaintiffs add that they have incurred medical expenses and will continue to require the services of medical staff for J.L. to recover.

The plaintiffs are seeking damages, plus court costs and any other relief the court deems proper. They are represented in this case by attorney Michael A. Langella of Bradley Law in St. Louis.
