BELLEVILLE – A wrongful death suit was filed against Caseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center alleging negligent care contributed to the death of a resident.

Plaintiff Nicka Barnhill, acting as administrator of the estate of Felerica Barnhill, filed a wrongful death lawsuit in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Caseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, citing negligence and carelessness in violation of the Illinois Nursing Home Act.

According to the lawsuit, Felerica Barnhill was a resident at the Caseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center from Sept. 24, 2021, through Nov. 7, 2021. The lawsuit states that Caseyville Nursing knew she was at risk for malnutrition and dehydration. Despite this alleged knowledge, Caseyville Nursing did not provide Barnhill with proper care and supervision to protect her from injuries.

The lawsuit states that on Nov. 7, 2021, Barnhill was malnourished and dehydrated when she was admitted to SLU hospital with an infection that had become septic. She ultimately died of her wounds on Nov. 24, 2021.

The plaintiff claims the defendant's negligence lead to Felerica Barnhill's death, causing her surviving family undue grief and sorrow. Additionally, Barnhill incurred healthcare costs related to her injuries up until her eventual death. As she was admitted into the facility's care, she was a protected individual under the state's Nursing Home Act.

The plaintiff is seeking damages and any other relief the court deems proper. She is represented in this case by attorney Matthew P. Young of Kuehn, Beasley & Young in Belleville.
