BELLEVILLE – A woman has filed a negligence lawsuit against Stookey Township, alleging she was injured after she stepped in a hole on the defendant's property.

Plaintiff Kathy McNaughton filed the lawsuit in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against the Stookey Township, citing negligence.

According to the lawsuit, McNaughton was on property owned and maintained by the township on Dec. 24, 2021. She alleges that when she was walking on the area next to the driveway, she stepped into a hole, causing her to fall and sustain serious injuries. McNaughton alleges the property has numerous dangerous holes on the premises.

According to McNaughton, the defendants negligently failed to properly maintain the premises.

McNaughton claims she has sustained severe injuries, which have caused her to endure pain, suffering and disability. She claims her injuries have caused her to lose wages and will impact her ability to earn income in the future. She adds that as a result of her injuries, she has incurred medical costs and will continue to require medical care to recover.

The plaintiff is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, plus court costs, interest and any other relief the court deems proper. She is represented in this case by attorney Nathan C. Lanter of Nelson & Nelson Attorneys at Law, P.C. in Belleville.
