BELLEVILLE – A tenant at a Belleville apartment is suing her landlord, alleging she was injured by a malfunctioning door.
Plaintiff Kristen Bennet filed a lawsuit in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Dale Leopker and The Estates Property Management, citing negligence and carelessness.
According to the lawsuit, Bennet was a resident living in a Belleville apartment that was owned and maintained by the defendants. Bennet claims that on May 26, 2021, she was passing through a public door to access the stairwell when the door suddenly slammed shut on her leg due to a broken spring.
The lawsuit states that the defendants negligently failed to properly maintain the premises to protect the safety of its tenants.
Bennet claims she sustained injuries, which have caused her to experience pain and suffering, mental anguish and will impact her ability to earn income in the future. The plaintiff adds that as a result of her injuries, she has incurred medical costs and will continue to require medical care to recover.
Bennet is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, plus court costs and any other relief the court deems proper. She is represented in this case by attorney Bruce R. Cook of Cook, Bartholomew, Shevline, Cook & Jones, LLP in Belleville.
