EDWARDSVILLE – A former Athletico patient claims he was prescribed an improper physical therapy program, which caused him to sustain serious injuries.

Plaintiff Jason Jackson filed the lawsuit in the Madison County Circuit Court against Athletico, LTD and its employee Sarah Schroeder, citing negligence.

According to the lawsuit, Schroeder was employed by Athletico as a physical therapist. On Oct. 12, 2020, Jackson was a client of the defendants for physical therapy following a carpal tunnel surgery, an injury he sustained at his workplace. He initially had physical therapy sessions three times a week for four weeks.

Jackson claims he was cleared by his surgeon to return to the workplace on Oct. 19, 2020, but was restricted from using his right arm. His surgeon also ordered that he decrease his physical therapy to two sessions per week. On Nov. 23, the surgeon cleared him to lift weight no heavier than 5 pounds.

From Oct. 26 to Dec.7, Jackson's physical therapy gradually increased his lifting exercises from 50 pounds overhead to 85 pounds overhead. On Dec. 7, Jackson allegedly informed the defendants of pain in his right shoulder, but they allegedly attributed the soreness to not working and continued to prescribe 85 pound exercises through Dec. 16.

On May 18, 2021, Jackson had an MRI, which revealed a rotator cuff tear in his shoulder. He underwent surgery on Aug. 18, 2021, to repair the tear.

Jackson alleges the defendants negligently prescribed him an improper physical therapy program for his condition, which caused him to sustain injuries that required surgery to repair. He adds that they ignored his complaints of shoulder pain and failed to update his therapy program.

Jackson claims he has endured pain, suffering and mental anguish because of his injury. He adds that he has incurred medical expenses to address the injury.

The plaintiff is seeking damages in excess of $50,000 and any other relief the court deems proper. He is represented in this case by attorneys John Hipskind and Brady M. McAninch of Hipskind & McAninch, LLC in Belleville.
