EDWARDSVILLE – Alton Steel has filed a lawsuit against its insurance provider, claiming the insurer is refusing to pay out a valid insurance claim for more than $5 million in damages following a fire.

Alton Steel filed the lawsuit in the Madison County Circuit Court against Sompo America Insurance Company, citing breach of contract.

According to the lawsuit, Sompo sold Alton Steel a comprehensive all-risk form of property insurance to cover property damage and interruptions to business. The policy was effective from June 1, 2021 through June 1, 2022.

On Nov. 24, 2021 a fire broke out as a result of an electrical arc furnace on the insured property, according to the lawsuit. The incident allegedly caused more than $800,000 in damages and interrupted the plaintiff's business for damages of more than $4.5 million. Since then, the defendant has allegedly refused to pay the amount of Alton Steel's insurance claim.

The plaintiff is requesting the court to enter a judgment in its favor for damages, plus court costs and any other relief the court deems proper. Alton Steel is represented in this case by attorney Thomas A. Vickers of Masina, Vickers, & Hadsell, P.C. in Chicago
