BELLEVILLE - A mother claims hospital staff failed to intervene in time during the delivery of her daughter, causing the infant to suffer permanent injuries.

Karen Jenkins, as mother and next friend of Kamryn Jenkins, filed the complaint in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Protestant Memorial Medical Center Inc., doing business as Memorial Hospital-Shiloh, Fairview Heights Medical Group S.C., doing business as BJC Medical Group of Illinois, Sekou Kelsey, MD, and Janice Gebke, RN.

Karen Jenkins presented to Memorial Hospital for the induction of labor at approximately 12:16 a.m. on June 9, 2020. Kamryn Jenkins was born at 9:46 p.m. on June 11, suffering from "severe and permanent brachial plexus injury to her right side." The suit states that she also suffered from Erb's Palsy as well as severe and permanent physical, developmental, neurological, cognitive and emotional injuries.

According to the complaint, the delivery of Kamryn Jenkins was risky due to the infant's size and other medical complications relating to Karen Jenkins. The plaintiff claims the defendants should have known that "failure to implement timely and appropriate interventions, and/or expedite delivery would expose plaintiff Kamryn to serious and obvious risks, including, but not limited to permanent and severe disability, brain damage, or even death."

The suit states that Kamryn Jenkins "continues to suffer from the sequelae of that injury, including, but not limited to physical and motor disabilities, developmental delays, and other sequela,  a severe permanent brachial plexus injury."

The mother is seeking more than $50,000 in damages. She is represented by Kelly Sabo Gaden and Seth Cardeli of Levin & Perconti in Chicago.
