BELLEVILLE - A lawsuit alleges a resident at a Belleville long-term nursing care facility suffered maggot-infested wounds and other injuries before her death.

Patricia Wise, as special administrator of the estate of Ella Mae Shaw, filed the complaint in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Cedar Ridge Health & Rehab Center, also known as Cedar Ridge Health & Rehabilitation Center LLC, and Covenant Care Midwest Inc.

According to the complaint, Shaw was a resident at the long-term nursing care facility until her death in December 2020.

Wise alleges the defendants were negligent by failing to prevent pressure ulcers to develop, failing to treat the infected ulcers, failing to account for the deceased's fall risk, failing to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and failing to terminate known incompetent employees. Wise claims the defendants' negligence led to Shaw's injuries, including maggot-infested decubitus pressure ulcers, sepsis, osteomyelitis and COVID-19, the suit states.

The defendant is accused of one count of wrongful death, one count of negligence, and Nursing Home Cart Act and Survival Act violations. The estate requests at least $50,000 in judgement from the court for each count, and is represented by Michael McGlynn of McGlynn & McGlynn of Belleville.
