EDWARDSVILLE - An East Alton couple is suing a remodeling company over the collapse of a partially completed home addition.
Jeff and Lori Depillo paid VIP Remodeling and Construction $62,100 for an addition to their house, to make it more accessible for Lori Depillo, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, claims the suit filed May 10 in Madison County Circuit Court.
Before the addition was complete, a portion of it "suddenly shifted and collapsed" the suits says. The company allegedly "failed to follow the architectural and building plans."
The couple is seeking $65,700 in damages plus attorney fees.
Also named as a defendant is Paul Martin, sole owner of the company.
The main beam and garage door headers used in the project were "severely deficient," the suit says. It cites other problems such as inadequate floor joist ties and anchor bolts.
The couple "depended on Paul Martin's competency and honesty rather than their own ability to discern latent defects which were not apparent," the suit said.
The company "failed to exercise ordinary skill, care and judgment that can be reasonably expected from similarly situated professionals," the couple said in their suit.
Plaintiffs are represented by Jeff Wagener of Sivia Business and Legal Services of Edwardsville.
