BELLEVILLE — The estate of a patient who died from sepsis is claiming hospital staff failed to properly diagnosis and treat her condition.

Theresa Ligibel, as special representative of the Estate of Courtney Ligibel, deceased, filed a complaint in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Sue Volarich, D.O., James Coleman, PA-C, Jennifer Perkins, R.N., and St. Elizabeth's Hospital of the Hospital Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, alleging medical negligence and other claims.

According to the plaintiff's complaint, the defendants assumed the medical care of Courtney Ligibel on April 2, 2020. The plaintiff claims St. Elizabeth's and its physician and nurse failed to monitor Ligibel's condition and acknowledge multiple vital signs and symptoms consistent with sepsis. She also claims the defendants failed to timely give Ligibel treatment for sepsis or administer the appropriate tests including a blood screening for her septic condition.

The plaintiff claims that as a result of the defendants' alleged negligence, Ligibel suffered death and her estate incurred large sums of money for medical treatment bills.

Ligibel seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. She is represented by Brian Wendler and Angie Zinzilieta of Wendler & Zinzilieta PC in Edwardsville.
