EDWARDSVILLE — A homeowner alleges a man intentionally set fire to and destroyed his property in Macoupin County.

Ronald Schafer, individually and on behalf of the Ronald W. Schafer 2007 Trust, filed a complaint on April 14 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Christopher M. Walker.

According to the complaint, Schafer owned a house and ancillary structures located in Macoupin County worth more than $50,000. He claims Walker intentionally set fire to the property in March 2020, which caused the destruction of the property. He alleges Walker had the intent of causing injury.

The suit states that Walker was criminally charged for the incident. He was found guilty but mentally ill. As a result, Schafer claims he he "is estopped from denying liability."

The plaintiff seeks monetary relief of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. They are represented by Thomas Maag of the Maag Law Firm LLC in Wood River.
