EDWARDSVILLE - A woman claims her mother's lung cancer went unnoticed by doctors and medical facilities for nearly three years.

Alexis Mitchell, as administrator for the estate of Sandra Jean Missey, deceased, filed a lawsuit in the Madison County Circuit Court against Anderson Hospital, Anderson Healthcare, Mayville Imaging, LLC, Maryville Radiology Group, Ltd., Southern Illinois Health Care Foundation, Inc. doing business as SIHF Healthcare, Granite City Illinois Hospital Company, LLC doing business as Gateway Regional Medical Center, Jowe Y. Hseih, M.D., Aaron R. Biala, M.D., Michael J. Wilson, M.D., Andrew C. Russell, M.D., Stanley J. Sidwell, M.D. and Mark S. Fedder, M.D., alleging wrongful death and medical negligence.

According to the lawsuit, on April 30, 2017, Missey presented to the defendants with complaints of loss of appetite and approximately 30 lb weight loss in 6 months. A CT scan of her chest was conducted and revealed hyperinflation. The scan indicated that there was no prior imaging study for comparison, though she was exhibiting a spontaneous cough. Beginning May 1, 2017, through approximately July 21, 2017, Mark S. Fedder treated Missey.

On Sept. 13, 2019, Missey saw the defendants again with complaints of a cough and wheezing. She then went to Anderson Hospital with complaints of shortness of breath, weakness and chest pain. A chest x-ray revealed upper right lobe collapse and some mass effect on trachea suspicious for underline mass. Missey underwent a biopsy the following day, which determined that she had lung cancer.

Mitchell alleges that had her mother been treated properly between April and July 2017, the cancer would have been found and treated sooner, which could have possibly saved Missey's life.

Mitchell seeks an unspecified judgment against the defendants. She is represented by Adam J. Zayed of Zayed Law Offices in Joliet.
