EDWARDSVILLE - A woman is suing a Granite City grocery store after she allegedly slipped and fell on a piece of paper in the checkout lane.
Felicia Urioste filed a lawsuit on Feb. 8 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Ruler Foods Inc., alleging negligence.
According to the lawsuit, Urioste was at the Ruler Foods located in Granite City on April 8, 2020, as an invitee of the store owned, operated, maintained and managed by defendant. Urioste alleges she slipped and fell on a piece of paper located on the ground in the checkout aisle. Urioste claims that before her fall, her hands were full of grocery items. As a result, she was unable to see the slip hazard located on the floor.
Urioste claims Ruler Foods was negligent in maintaining and providing reasonably safe conditions, failing to maintain a safe condition of the floor, failing to supervise or manage the floor of the checkout aisle, allowing a slip hazard to be present, failing to inspect the floor to ensure it was free of hazards, failing to warn customers of hazardous conditions by either signage or other suitable warning, failing to exercise reasonable care and maintenance of the premises and being otherwise negligent in the maintenance and upkeep of the premises.
Urioste claims she was caused to suffer severe injury and pain, lost wages, loss of enjoyment of life, past and future medical bill, past and future pain and suffering and disability.
Urioste seeks an amount in excess of $50,000, plus cost and further relief deemed just and proper. Urioste is represented by Matthew P. Young of Kuehn Beasley & Young PC in Belleville.
