Open letter to Edwardsville #7 superintendent and school board

Subject: Hall of Shame Ceremony this weekend

I woke up this morning to dozens of pictures of aging former athletes and coaches celebrating gleefully at the jam-packed Hall of Fame ceremony.

All were maskless, and all are at a MUCH, MUCH higher risk of severe Covid than any of the schoolchildren you’re still forcing to mask all day. It was the biggest hypocrisy I’ve ever seen.

Naturally I saw a smiling Dr. Shelton & grinning Principal Stewart (sic) there. But the real kicker was the quote in the (Edwardsville Intelligencer) article from Dave Lipe that said, “It’s been a lot of fun and I see a lot of smiles here tonight and that makes it worthwhile.”

It’s funny how much it means to see smiles on peoples’ faces, especially now. I agree, and so do the students of District #7, but your decisions have kept them from feeling that for 2 years.

I heard this weekend that even Naperville woke up & is ending the mandatory masking.

We saw 75,000 people packed elbow to elbow at the Superbowl, all maskless and cheering. And yet this morning, the kids of District 7 are still being segregated by mask status and kids aren’t able to feel the joy of seeing other people smile. It’s despicable, it’s ignorant, and it’s time to end the charade here in Edwardsville.
