Motorist sued over rear-end collision on N. Illinois Street

BELLEVILLE - A motorist and passenger are suing another driver for allegedly causing a rear-end collision on N. Illinois Street.

James Moore and Ashley Chase filed a lawsuit on Jan. 21 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Thompson Baty, alleging negligence.

According to the lawsuit, Moore and Chase were in a vehicle traveling southbound on N. Illinois Street on Oct. 30, 2020. Baty was also traveling southbound on N. Illinois Street when he allegedly caused a rear-end collision with the plaintiffs' vehicle.  

The plaintiffs claim Baty negligently and carelessly failed to operate his vehicle in a safe and proper manner, failed to keep a proper lookout, failed to keep the vehicle under control, failed to use every precaution to avoid a collision, proceeded at a speed that was greater than reasonable and proper, and failed to decrease his speed, stop or swerve so as to avoid colliding.

The plaintiffs claim they were caused to sustained severe and permanent injuries, disability, disfigurement, mental anguish, pain and suffering. They also claim they became liable for large sums of monies for hospital and medical treatment.

Moore and Chase seek an amount is excess of $50,000. They are represented by John Hipskind of Hipskind & McAninch LLC in Belleville.
