EDWARDSVILLE - The daughter of a man who died after doctors allegedly failed to provide a proper diagnosis while he was in the emergency room is suing the hospital and physicians.

Amanda Martin, as representative of the estate of Thomas L. Barczewski, deceased, filed a lawsuit on Jan. 13 in the Madison County Circuit Court against the Granite City Illinois Hospital Company, LLC doing business as Gateway Regional Medical Center, Brian A. Erickson, M.D. and Jami Davis-Jackson, NP, alleging claims for survival act and wrongful death. Martin is Barczewski's daughter.

According to the lawsuit, Barczewski, 60, went into the emergency room at Gateway Regional on May 2, 2021, with complaints of malaise, pain and aches in his arms and chest, and chills. Barczewski was evaluated and sent home. Barczewski returned to the emergency room the next day with more symptoms and was admitted. Barczewski was found unresponsive hours later in his hospital bed.

Martin alleges the defendants failed to formulate an appropriate differential diagnosis, failed to order stat cardiac enzymes, failed to order a stat EKG and failed to diagnose and properly treat Barczewski.

Barczewski was allegedly caused to endure severe pain and suffering, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life, medical expenses, lost wages and death. Martin claims she was caused to suffer great loss, grief, sorrow, mental suffering and loss of companionship.

Martin seeks a sum in excess of $40,000, plus cost of suit and pre-judgment interest. Martin is represented by D. Jeffery Ezra of Byron Carlson Petri & Kalb LLC in Edwardsville.
