EDWARDSVILLE — A woman alleges she fell at an Edwardsville restaurant when she slipped on stairs that did not have handrails.

Leatrice M. Garrett filed a complaint  Nov. 12 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Chapi Inc., and LSBH LLC, alleging negligence.

According to her complaint, Garrett was a customer at the defendant's restaurant located on North Main Street in Edwardsville on Feb. 8, 2020. She claims that as she was walking onto a stairway connected to the restaurant, she slipped, fell and suffered injuries, including a fractured foot.

Garrett alleges the defendant was negligent for improperly constructing and maintaining the stairway, failing to have anti-skid footing materials on the stairway, failing to warn of the hazard or failing to block access to the exterior stairway. She also alleges the defendant failed to inspect or provide handrails on the stairway, which were necessary to prevent injury.

She claims she incurred medical, hospital and therapy bills as well as mental anguish due to the incident.

Garrett seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. She is represented by Ryan Web and Sara Salger of The Gori Laws Firm PC in Edwardsville.
