EDWARDSVILLE — A patient claims a physician with OSF Saint Anthony's Health Center negligently performed a cholecystectomy, causing her to suffer injuries.

Angela Powers filed a complaint Oct. 29 in the Madison County Circuit Court against OSF Healthcare System, doing business as OSF Saint Anthony's Health Center, OSF Multi-Speciality Group, doing business as OSF Medial Group, and Alejandro F. Sanz, M.D., alleging medical negligence.

According to the complaint, Powers underwent a laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed by Sanz on Oct. 22, 2020. She alleges that Sanz negligently performed the surgery by improperly placing one or more surgical clips, transecting the bile duct near her duodenum, transecting her hepatic duct near the liver and damaging her blood supply to the hepatic duct.

Powers claims the defendants failed to render medical care and treatment that follow the "accepted standards of prevailing medical practice and opinion," which caused her to suffer injuries.

Powers seeks monetary relief, trial by jury and all other just relief. She is represented by Adam Zayed and Julian Hoshell of The Zayed Law Offices in Joliet.
