EDWARDSVILLE — A mother alleges her baby died from Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) after being fed Enfamil cow's milk-based formula.

Abigail Grosshuesch, individually and as next of friend and administrator of the Estate of Isabella Zormelo, deceased, filed a complaint Oct. 18 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Mead Johnson & Company LLC and Mead Nutrition Company, alleging negligence and other claims.

According to the plaintiff's complaint, baby Isabella was born preterm at Edward Hospital in Naperville on Oct. 13, 2013. Grosshuesch claims Isabella did well on her mother's breast milk and had a "healthy and normal brain" and was "progressing medically." She alleges that on Oct. 27, 2013, Isabella was fed Enfamil cow's milk-based product, which caused her to develop NEC and undergo several hours of "aggressive medical intervention."

According to the plaintiff's complaint, Isabella died on Nov. 1, 2013, from complications of NEC. She alleges Mead Johnson knew of the dangers of its cow's milk-based formula for premature infants and failed to give adequate warning of the risk of NEC or to contact the FDA to inform them the products were linked to NEC.

The plaintiff seeks compensation, trial by jury and all other just relief. She is represented by Elizabeth Kaeny, Jeffrey Kroll and Ava Gehringer of Levin, Rojas, Camassar & Reck LLC in Chicago.
