EAST ST. LOUIS — A driver alleges she suffered severe injuries on State Route 159 when a U.S. Marshal failed to slow his vehicle down at an intersection and caused a collision.

Cassie J. Flynn filed a complaint Oct. 15 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois against United States of America and Jason S. Batson, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, Flynn was driving a Volkswagen Passat on Illinois State Route 159 on Dec. 2, 2019. She was stopped at red light at the intersection of Town Center Drive in Maryville. Flynn claims that Batson, who was working for the United States Department of Justice, United States Marshals Service, was driving a Chevy Tahoe and failed to slow down or stop at the intersection. Flynn alleges Batson collided with the rear of her Volkswagen while traveling at a high rate of speed.

Flynn alleges the collision caused her to suffer severe injuries including whiplash, a concussion and injuries to her neck, shoulders and back, which may require surgical treatment.

She claims Batson failed to keep a proper lookout, was speeding, driving while distracted and failed to reduce his speed to avoid the collision.

Flynn seeks compensation of more than $75,000 and all other just relief. She is represented by Eric Carlson of Byron Carlson Petri & Kalb LLC in Edwardsville.
